Vol. 236 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Dock Hazard.

20.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he will have the canal in the Spenser Dock area of Dublin patrolled as it remains a constant hazard for children playing there, especially in the holiday season.

21.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that another drowning took place in the Royal Canal at Spenser Dock, Dublin last week end; and if he will take immediate steps to have this portion of the canal effectively fenced off so as to reduce as far as possible the danger to children playing there.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 20 and 21 together.

I am aware that another unfortunate drowning took place in the Royal Canal at Spenser Dock last week end.

I understand that Dublin Corporation carried out certain works within the past twelve months which were designed to prevent as far as possible access to the Dock from Sheriff Street Bridge for the maintenance of which they are responsible. I also understand that Córas Iompair Éireann erected protective barriers to prevent trespass on their property from the Sheriff Street end of the dock. It would be for that body to decide what additional steps could be taken to prevent further trespass.
