Vol. 236 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Banking Institutions.

26.

asked the Minister for Finance the total number of banking institutions operating now in Ireland, distinguishing between Irish and non-Irish concerns; and whether any regulations exist to control the influence of non-Irish banking houses on the Irish economy.

At present 49 companies holding bankers' licences under the Central Bank Act, 1942, are operating actively in the State. Of these seven are incorporated and have their head offices outside the State.

There are no regulations directed solely at non-Irish, as distinct from Irish banking institutions.

Does the Minister think it essential that there should be?

To make a distinction between the regulations applying to the different banks?

I do not think so.

Non-Irish as against Irish?

I think the thing to do is to regulate properly for all banks operated here. As the Deputy probably knows, after the Recess we shall be bringing forward a piece of legislation which will be designed to give the Government, through the Central Bank, a very considerable degree of control over the operation of all banking institutions.
