Vol. 236 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Free Secondary Education.

39.

asked the Minister for Education if he is satisfied that the number of places available in secondary schools will be sufficient to meet the needs of children now completing primary education and wishing to avail of free secondary education.

I am satisfied that the arrangements being made will ensure that places will be available in secondary, vocational and comprehensive schools for all students seeking post-primary education.

40.

Mr. O'Malley

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that several secondary schools throughout the country, which have opted for the free secondary education scheme, are refusing pupils who have not attended the fee-paying primary departments attached to these schools; and if he will take steps to prevent this practice.

I am not aware that any secondary school is refusing to admit pupils on the grounds of their not having attended the fee-paying primary section of the school. Any such practice would have to be deprecated.
