Vol. 236 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Geo-Chemical Survey.

62.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that a geo-chemical survey of the Meath-Dublin area has been carried out recently; if his Department were informed of the findings of this survey; and whether his Department will investigate the possibility of commercial development of any suitable sites.

I am aware that a geo-chemical survey is being carried out by An Foras Talúntais and that a summary report has been made on the Dublin-Meath area preliminary to the publication of the complete results. The results of this survey when published will receive careful attention from the Geological Survey Office attached to my Department. It is the Government's policy not to participate directly in mineral exploration and development. Investigation of the possibility of commercial development of any mineral deposits indicated would be a matter for private enterprise.

Is this the only area in which An Foras Talúntais have carried out this survey?

I think they are doing it on a more widespread basis. I do not know whether they are doing it in any other area.
