Vol. 236 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mining Surveys.

63.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if his attention has been drawn to reports that a significant deposit of mercury has been located by a mining firm operating near Limerick Junction; if he will comment on the matter; what technical reports are placed before him by private mining companies operating and surveying in Ireland; and if he considers that he is sufficiently informed by these companies of their results.

I have seen the reports mentioned by the Deputy but I do not think that this is a matter on which I should comment.

Holders of prospecting licences are required to supply me with full details of all exploration carried out under these licences. Holders of State mining leases are obliged to furnish returns of production from their leasehold each half year and to make available to me on request full information regarding any exploration carried out within the leasehold.

I am satisfied that I am sufficiently informed about the results of surveys carried out under State facilities.

We have not had a report on this area yet?

I have some.

What is the position?

I do not think I should comment.
