Vol. 236 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Issue of Death Certificates.

72.

asked the Minister for Health if he is aware that death certificates in respect of persons killed in accidents are not issued by the Registrar until he has received certain particulars from the coroner; and that widows who apply for pensions or insurances are sometimes gravely inconvenienced by delays, which are liable to occur under the present procedure, in the issue of such certificates; and if he will arrange, if necessary by the introduction of amending legislation, either for the issue of a death certificate without reference to the coroner or for the issue of a provisional certificate that would be sufficient to enable a widow to apply for any pension or insurance to which she is entitled.

: The Coroners Act, 1962, contains provisions designed to ensure that investigation by a Coroner of the cause of death does not delay the registration of the death. I would welcome any information which the Deputy can offer regarding undue delay in the registration of such deaths or the subsequent issue of death certificates. If this information reveals flaws in the existing registration system or in its operation, I will have steps taken to remedy them.
