Vol. 236 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Shooting and Fishing Rights.

102.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he intends to introduce legislation to curb the rights of the private individuals who at present have control of large tracts of country for shooting and fishing purposes.

I am not aware that there is need for legislation of the nature suggested by the Deputy. The great majority of Irish farmers are now the owners of the shooting rights over their lands. In regard to those cases where the shooting rights were reserved to the former landlords or other parties on the sale of the tenants' holdings under the Land Purchase Acts, there is already adequate provision in the Land Acts for the transfer of these reserved rights to the owners of the holdings.

In relation to fishing, the Land Commission's interest is limited to such fishing rights as are appurtenant to lands vested in them under the Land Acts; these they have the statutory right to purchase in appropriate cases.
