Vol. 236 No. 7

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - CIE General Manager.

26.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if the General Manager of CIE has been appointed a director of any semi-State company; and, if so, on what terms.

: The General Manager of Córas Iompair Éireann was appointed by the Government to be a member of the Board of Córas Iompair Éireann for the period beginning on 7th October, 1966, and ending on 31st August, 1971. The terms and conditions of appointment fixed by the Government are as follows:—

(i) remuneration will be at the rate of £500 a year;

(ii) during any period in which he is also a member of the Board of Ostlanna Iompair Éireann Teoranta, remuneration will be at the rate of £700 a year;

(iii) he will be required to devote to the performance of his duties as a member of the Board so much of his time as may be necessary for the proper and efficient discharge by him of those duties;

(iv) in respect of journeys reasonably and necessarily undertaken by him as a member of the Board, he will be entitled to travelling expenses and subsistence allowances at the rates appropriate to civil servants of the highest grade;

(v) in the event that he is appointed to the Great Northern Railway Board, he will act on that Board without remuneration additional to his remuneration as a member of Córas Iompair Éireann;

(vi) no remuneration (apart from his remuneration as General Manager of CIE) other than that mentioned above, will be paid to him in respect of any other services performed by him for or on behalf of the Board, save with the concurrence of the Minister and the Minister for Finance.

The General Manager has been appointed by the Board of CIE to be a director of Ostlanna Iompair Éireann and by me to be a member of the Great Northern Railway Board. He has not been appointed a director of any other company under the aegis of my Department.

: Or under the aegis of any other Department?

: Did the Minister say he was entitled to free travelling?

: To the travelling expenses appropriate.

: Does the Minister think it appropriate for the Chairman of CIE to use a helicopter, when he could use a train, to travel around Ireland? CIE are telling the people to use the train but it is, apparently, not good enough for the General Manager.

(Cavan): Ministers will have to travel by helicopter in future.

: They are all up in the air now.
