Vol. 236 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

51.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will have an immediate investigation carried out into the water supply in Kinnitty, Birr, County Offaly, where a general demand for such investigation has been requested by the residents.

I am informed by Offaly County Council that no complaint has been received by them in relation to the existing Kinnitty water supply scheme which is more than adequate to meet existing demands.

52.

asked the Minister for Local Government when he proposes to sanction a proposal by Mayo County Council to extend the water supply system along Castlebar Road, Swinford, by the house of a person (name supplied) and those of other local tenants.

On the latest information available to me the local authority do not regard the extension referred to by the Deputy as having a high priority in their water and sewerage programme.

53.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the serious delay by his Department in sanctioning the provision of an adequate water and sewerage system at Newport, County Mayo; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am not so aware. There is an existing water supply in Newport and I understand from Mayo County Council that they have no proposals for augmenting this supply which is considered adequate.

Tenders for the Newport sewerage scheme were submitted to my Department on the 6th September, 1968, and are at present the subject of correspondence with the local authority. I hope to be in a position to convey a final decision in the matter on receipt of a reply to my Department's letter of the 26th ultimo.

Does the Minister realise that already two schools have been closed down there and that this town in County Mayo is a complete dry spot as far as Fianna Fáil are concerned?

The matter will be dealt with when I get a reply to the letter.
