Vol. 236 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Laois Schools.

68.

asked the Minister for Education why children formerly attending Briscole school, County Laois, were refused admission to Paddock school.

There is no accommodation available in the Paddock School. Free transport has been provided to take the Briscole children to Ballyfin school which is in the same parish and where accommodation is available.

Officers of my Department recently discussed this matter with the school manager and the parents.

It is proposed to arrange a further discussion shortly.

69.

asked the Minister for Education why teaching facilities at Vicarstown school, County Laois, have been withdrawn; and whether local parents were consulted as to the future of the school by officers of his Department.

The decision to close this school was taken because I was fully satisfied that the educational interests of the children would be much better served by transferring them to the larger schools in Stradbally. Officers of my Department had consultations with representatives of the parents before this decision was taken. Free transport is available to take the children to the schools in Stradbally.

Could the Minister say if the parents agreed to this change?

I do not think I could say that.

I happen to be aware of the position in this area and I know there was considerable opposition to it.

Yes, I think that is correct.

70.

asked the Minister for Education if he will conduct a full scale public inquiry into the closing of Briscole national school in Ballyfin parish, County Laois; if he will make a statement in regard to the unusual circumstances in this case; and if he will give the matter special attention having regard to the grievance of every parent in the area.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to Question No. 68. I have nothing to add to that reply.

71.

asked the Minister for Education if he will hold a full scale inquiry into the closing of the national school at Vicarstown in Stradbally parish, County Laois, having regard to the special circumstances in this case and the stand taken by the Parents Committee; and if he will make a general statement in regard to the special circumstances of this case.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to Question No. 69. I have nothing to add to that reply except to say that I am not aware that there are any special circumstances associated with this case.
