Vol. 236 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Repeal of Housing Act.

26.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that the references to "rural areas" in section 16 of the Housing Act, 1966 are operating unfairly against smallholders, including smallholders of five acres with £5 valuation and employees in need of rehousing; and if it is his intention to introduce legislation to repeal this anomalous part of the Housing Act.

I am aware of the restricted definition of "rural area" in this context. This matter has been under consideration in my Department, and will be further reviewed in association with other amendments of the Housing Act, 1966, which are at present being examined.

If the Minister is really serious about doing something in that area will he do it quickly while there is a chance?

It is being examined at present and it will be dealt with.

They should not spend too much time examining it.

(Cavan): Could the Minister tell us where the Taoiseach is?

That is not a matter for my Department.
