Vol. 236 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Knockfola (Donegal) School.

40.

asked the Minister for Education why the Fíor-Ghaeltacht national school at Knockfola, County Donegal, has been closed without prior consultation with the parents of the children attending same, as a sum of £1,400 was spent on the reconstruction of this school two years ago, and as in the existing catchment area it has a greater number of schoolgoing pupils than any of the four schools surrounding it in the district and a greater number of young children.

The decision to close Knockfola school and to convey the pupils by transport service to Meenacladdy school in the same Fíor-Ghaeltacht area, where accommodation is available for them, is in accordance with the policy to regroup small schools into larger and more efficient teaching units. This policy, as the Deputy well knows, has been framed in the educational interests of the children.

The decision to close Knockfola school was taken following consultation with the reverend manager and the matter was fully discussed with the parents by an inspector of my Department on 24th September. 1968
