Vol. 236 No. 9

Written Answers. - Local Government Superannuation.

59.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will give details of any circular letters addressed to local authorities in connection with the interpretation of "service days" for the purpose of the Local Government (Superannuation) Act, 1956, relative to the 5-day working week.

On 4th June, 1968, a circular letter was issued to each local authority advising them that in respect of periods during which the five-day working week was in operation in relation to any servant of the local authority, the aggregate number of "service days" recorded to the credit of the servant in any week should be increased by one-fifth for superannuation purposes subject to an overriding limitation of six service days. This adjustment was necessitated by the effects of the introduction of the five-day working week on the limits of 200 and 300 "service days" provided for in the Local Government (Superannuation) Act, 1956, in relation to the calculation of pensionable service. These limits had been decided on the basis that local authority servants worked a six-day week.
