Vol. 236 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drainage Works.

9.

asked the Minister for Finance the present position with regard to the drainage of the River Lee, Tralee, County Kerry; and when work is likely to start on this scheme.

The River Lee, Tralee, is on the priority list of minor catchments to be dealt with under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945. A survey of the catchment area has been made but a study of river flows and tidal conditions over a long period is necessary before the design of a scheme can be considered. It is not possible to say at this stage when work on a drainage scheme is likely to start.

10.

asked the Minister for Finance when it is hoped to have drainage work undertaken on the Carrigahorig river, Nenagh, County Tipperary; and if the work will be given special attention because it is of great importance to the farmers of the area.

11.

asked the Minister for Finance when drainage work is likely to commence on the Carrigahorig river, County Tipperary.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to answer Questions Nos. 10 and 11 together. Work on this scheme will start next week.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that although Deputies from his own Party, from the Labour Party and from the Fine Gael Party have been asking questions about this for the past two and a half years people outside were notified before them, because this information appeared in the local press last week? That is not very fair.

When information is sought about matters of this kind information is given.

It is given to Fianna Fáil Deputies first in a lot of cases as well.

The people of the area are not worried who gets the reply first but I should like to state that the man who should get the thanks for this was the late Deputy Donogh O'Malley who put it on the priority list and made it possible for us to have this scheme.

12.

asked the Minister for Finance when drainage work will commence on the River Suir.

A survey of the Suir catchment has been completed and the design of a scheme is in hands. Until a scheme has been prepared and the requirements of the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945, complied with it will not be possible to say when works can be commenced.

13.

asked the Minister for Finance if it has been decided where in County Meath the headquarters of the Office of Public Works will be situated for the Boyne drainage scheme.

A site for the headquarters for the Boyne scheme has not yet been finally selected.

As the people of Trim are holding a site in anticipation that the Board of Works will want it can the Parliamentary Secretary say if a decision will be made soon?

Certainly a decision will be made soon. That is certain, but I would not like to say at this stage which site will be selected.
