Vol. 236 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Agricultural Exports.

22.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he is satisfied with the present operation of the quota system for agricultural exports to Britain under the Anglo-Irish Free Trade Agreement.

The only quotas on imports of Irish agricultural products into Britain relate to butter and bacon, under multilateral arrangements which existed prior to the coming into operation of the Free Trade Area Agreement. I consider that the quota systems for these products have worked reasonably satisfactorily. Under the Agreement the basic quota for Irish butter has been increased to 26,000 tons as compared with 12,905 tons immediately preceding the Agreement. The various country quotas for bacon are due to be reconsidered in the context of the review of the Multilateral Understanding of the Supply of Bacon to the UK Market which will take place during the next few months.
