Vol. 236 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Calf Subsidy Scheme.

26.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he will consider the introduction of a calf subsidy scheme which would be of benefit to the farmers of this country, and particularly the small farmers, as unlike the heifer subsidy scheme, every farmer would benefit by it.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to Deputy Donegan's question of 25th June, last, to which I have nothing to add.

If the Minister has nothing to add to the reply to my question in June last would the Minister not now consider looking again at the problem and the good Fine Gael policy in this regard which was laid down long before the infamous heifer scheme was produced which was to provide a grant for each heifer mated in the country, each cow mated or calf born? Can the Minister not produce a grant for each heifer mated and at least get one calf out of them before they are exported? The balance of payments will go to hell on that score.

I should be sorry to disappoint the Deputy on that.

The Minister will be replying to a question next Tuesday in that connection.

And to quite a few others also.
