Vol. 236 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Galway Itinerant Sites.

46.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the damage done to improve relations between the community at large and the itinerants in County Galway by the decision of the county council to reject his Department's recommendations on the question of sites for itinerants; and what further steps he proposes to take to improve the lot of these people.

I assume the Deputy refers to a recent decision by Galway Corporation not to proceed with the provision of an itinerant site at Rahoon, as reported in the daily newspapers. I have not yet been informed officially of this decision.

I shall continue to press all local authorities, including Galway Corporation, to provide sites for those itinerant families who cannot immediately be housed. The location and size of the sites are, however, primarily matters for determination by the local authority in each case.
