Vol. 236 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Care of Aged and Incapacitated Relatives.

60.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he is aware that there are many able-bodied young people who sacrifice employment opportunities in order to look after aged and incapacitated relatives; if there are any plans in his Department to pay special allowances to such people; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware that there is a problem of the kind mentioned by the Deputy in his question and to meet it I had certain provisions included in the Social Welfare (Miscellaneous Provision) Act, which was enacted earlier this year. The Deputy will find them in sections 9 and 10 of the Act. These provisions will come into operation on the 3rd January, 1969.
