Vol. 236 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Building of Dispensaries.

81.

asked the Minister for Health why new dispensaries are being built if their abolition is planned under the new health services.

Health Authorities were advised early in 1966 that, apart from special areas where a choice of doctor would not be available, further commitments should not be entered into for the provision of dispensaries or dispensary residences. They were asked to consult the Department about arrangements for the provision of doctors' residences and dispensaries in any remote areas where it was considered that such facilities would be needed to retain the services of a general practitioner. Three proposals of this nature are currently proceeding.

New or increased accommodation has been provided or is being planned to cope with the increased demand for general practitioner and other health services in newly developed areas in Dublin. This accommodation is not used solely for dispensary sessions, and its future use on the introduction of a choice of doctor scheme will depend on the demand in the particular area for other health services such as child welfare and immunisation clinics, dental and psychiatric services.
