Vol. 236 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rural Electrification.

33.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power when the ESB propose to provide rural electricity for the townlands of Upper Tully, Croveigh and Meenamara in the Dungloe district of County Donegal.

I am informed by the Electricity Supply Board that Upper Tully is in the Board's Dungloe rural area and Croveigh and Meenamara are in the adjoining Rosses rural area. Under the planned post-development scheme, both areas are scheduled for re-canvass towards the end of 1969 and construction work should commence about six months later. The electricity supply will then be extended to all applicants who accept the terms quoted and have their houses wired.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that this is a Fíor-Ghaeltacht area and should get some preference because many people are leaving these three particular townlands because they do not enjoy the amenities their neighbours have?

I am aware that it is a Fíor-Ghaeltacht area but I would point out that the electricity supply has already been extended to this area and that this is a question of a re-canvass which is being done on a planned basis. This re-canvass of the area towards the end of 1969 is by way of giving further preference to that area.

The Parliamentary Secretary will appreciate that 100 per cent of the residents of the locality have already replied and there is no necessity for a canvass or re-canvass?

I do not think it is 100 per cent.
