Vol. 236 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Added-Value Tax.

24.

asked the Minister for Finance when a decision will be made on the suggestion for the replacement of the existing non-selective turnover tax system by the added-value tax system proposed by the EEC for adoption in all member countries not later than 1970.

I cannot say at this stage when a decision will be made on the question of adopting an added-value system of taxation.

As the Deputy will recall, a White Paper on Added-Value Tax was published last June. Its aim was to give information on that system of taxation, so as to afford an opportunity to business and other interests to consider the matter and to express their views on it. I would welcome these views and will be glad to give them careful consideration.

If an added-value tax were to be introduced here, it would be my intention, as indicated in the foreword to the White Paper, to have full discussions in good time with the business and other interests concerned.

Can the Taoiseach say what views or what body of views he has so far received on the White Paper?

I have not the answer to that question. If the Deputy would like to ask it again I will look into it.
