Vol. 236 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Medical Appointments.

1.

asked the Taoiseach why the Local Appointments Commission and Civil Service Commission do not place any advertisements for medical appointments in a medical newspaper (name supplied) which is circulated to every medical doctor in the Republic.

The Local Appointments and Civil Service Commissioners advertise all medical appointments being filled on their recommendation in the Dublin and Cork morning papers.

The coverage resulting from such advertisements is normally adequate as far as persons resident in Ireland are concerned.

The Commissioners occasionally publish advertisements for posts in medical journals published in Ireland where special circumstances seem to render that course advisable.

In view of the fact that there seems to be extreme difficulty in getting dispensary doctors in some dispensary districts at the present time would the Taoiseach not agree that it would be a good idea if the paper referred to could carry the advertising of the posts?

It probably would be, but I understand one of the practical difficulties is that the period elapsing between the publication of this journal is usually fairly long and might not be suitable in order to give the requisite notice to prospective applicants.

The Taoiseach is obviously not aware of the length of time it takes from the time the Local Appointments Commission are notified until they actually try to get a doctor for a dispensary. In one district in my own area the period is two years.

I am referring to the closing date by which applications must be in.
