Vol. 236 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Terenure (Dublin) Lighting.

57.

asked the Minister for Local Government when Dublin Corporation will provide urgently needed public lighting in Aideen Place, Terenure, Dublin.

This is entirely a matter for the Dublin Corporation.

Can the Minister say, or is he interested, why the corporation have taken three years to do something when the money was provided long ago? Will the Minister interest himself sufficiently in the affairs of Dublin city to ensure that when money is allocated it is spent?

The Deputy should address his question to some active member of Dublin Corporation.

Would the Minister stop triumphing at his narrow retention of his office and use that office, now that he has retained it narrowly, to take an interest in the people he is supposed to serve?

Take a day off and go to the meetings of the corporation.

Would the Minister for Local Government convey my remarks to the insolent person beside him?

Is the Minister not aware that Dublin Corporation are anxious to improve public lighting throughout the city but, because of inadequate finances, they are unable to do it? Has the Minister anything to say, any suggestions to make, on this matter?

I suggest that Deputies Mullen and Ryan should settle this between themselves because, as Deputy Ryan has said, the money has been provided.

The representatives of the Minister's own Party on the corporation are well aware of the poor lighting system.

That is the trouble about coalitions—no lighting.

The Taca men may be on top for a while but they will be put down after the Ard-Fheis.

I should like to point out to Deputy Mullen that the money being spent on public lighting in Dublin city this year is the amount voted at the estimates meeting. The Deputy may not have been present at that meeting, but we were.

Having regard to what Deputy Moore has said, he well knows that, if there is to be an improved lighting system, it would have to be done by raising more money from the rates. What I am asking is whether the Minister will do anything about the burden.

As Deputy Ryan has told you, you have the money but you will not spend it.

Coalition policy.

(Cavan): The Minister talked enough about that during the referendum but the people did not listen.
