asked the Minister for Defence if he will state the overseas allowances paid to military personnel serving with the United Nations from (a) Ireland, (b) Britain, (c) Denmark, (d) Sweden and (e) Canada.

Overseas allowances at the following daily rates are payable to Irish troops serving with the United Nations Force in Cyprus.

In addition a local service allowance of 9/3d per day is paid to all ranks.

Irish troops serving with the United Nations Truce Supervision Organisation in the Middle East are not paid overseas allowances. The United Nations pay these officers a subsistence allowance of 10 US dollars per day.

I am not in a position to give any authoritative information about the overseas allowances payable to troops from other states serving with the United Nations.
