asked the Minister for Finance the wage rates for women cleaners now and three years ago; and the average number of hours per week worked by a woman cleaner.

The reply is in the form of a tabular statement which, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to have circulated with the Official Report.

1. The bulk of cleaners are in category (1).

2. The pay of cleaners in categories (3) and (4) is currently being revised.

3. The hours worked by part-time cleaners are determined by local needs.

asked the Minister for Finance the number of women cleaners employed by the State; and the number employed three years ago.

The available statistics show that on 1st January, 1968, the number was 830. For 1st January, 1965, it was 811.

asked the Minister for Finance whether the cleaning of any Government offices had been transferred from directly employed women cleaners to contractors; if so, if he will give details of the number of women cleaners who have become redundant; the mode of selecting the contractors appointed; and the costs involved.

The cleaning of certain Government office has been transferred from directly employed cleaners. Particulars are contained in a tabular statement which, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to have circulated with the Official Report.
