Vol. 236 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Wexford Denture Scheme.

118.

asked the Minister for Health if he will make a statement as to the possibility of the introduction of a free denture scheme by the Wexford County Council for holders of medical cards.

The Wexford Health Authority provide a free denture service for the holders of medical cards who are entitled to priority treatment on medical grounds. The service for these priority groups has improved over the last few years and is now considered good.

As I have informed the Deputy in answer to his previous questions on this subject, the reason why the County Wexford Health Authority are not in a position to supply dentures to all eligible persons is due to the shortage of dental staff. Every effort has been made to fill the dental staff vacancies and a dentist has been recommended recently by the Local Appointments Commission for the remaining vacancy in County Wexford and there will be some further improvement in the denture service when he takes up duty in the near future.
