Vol. 237 No. 3

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Smelter Plant Location.

69.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he has made any decision in regard to the location of a smelter plant for smelting ores from mines in the vicinity of Limerick; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The establishment of a smelter is a matter for private enterprise and requires extensive preliminary study. A feasibility study is at present being undertaken by a group of companies which are engaged in the mining of ore in this country. The location of the smelter is one of the matters which would be examined in the feasibility study and the ultimate location of the smelter—if it is decided to establish one—would undoubtedly be determined entirely on economic and technical grounds as a result of the feasibility study.
