Vol. 237 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cattle Exports.

2.

asked the Taoiseach the percentage of total exports which consisted of live cattle for the years 1965, 1966 and 1967.

Permanent exports of live cattle represented 20.8 per cent of total domestic exports in 1965, 18.4 per cent in 1966 and 15.8 per cent in 1967.

Will the Parliamentary Secretary say whether or not he considers this to be a good trend——

It is a good trend——

——in view of what was promised under the Anglo-Irish Free Trade Area Agreement with regard to the export of cattle?

In the last three years our exports of carcase beef went up from 7.1 to 14.6 per cent. It is more important to the country to have carcase beef exported than live cattle because we are getting a greater return.

And our total exports increased considerably.

What about the £10 million extra?

What about the extra money promised to the farmers in the first year of the agreement?
