Vol. 237 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Parking of Disabled Persons Vehicles.

53.

asked the Minister for Justice whether he is aware of the severe hardship on physically handicapped people who endeavour to support themselves despite such handicap, by reason of the fact that they are not allowed to park their special vehicles as close as possible to their places of employment because of no-parking regulations; and whether in view of the ever-increasing parking restrictions he will urgently consider taking special measures to ease the burden on these people.

I am aware that parking restrictions are a hardship on some physically-handicapped persons who find walking very difficult and who are unable to find parking-space.

The Garda Síochána endeavour to assist such people as far as circumstances permit but, where it is a question of people who are at work and who, therefore, are looking for all-day parking, the position is a particularly awkward one since it is clearly impossible to allow a car to be parked all day in a place where parking is likely to lead to serious obstruction of traffic.

The Gardaí are at present engaged in a review of some of the bye-laws and are considering whether it would be practical to include some special concession in respect of disabled persons.
