asked the Taoiseach how much per £1 spent by the consumer on goods is attributable to the total cost of advertising in the community.

asked the Taoiseach the total annual expenditure on advertising of all forms in the State in the years 1957 up to and including 1967 in all media.

With your permission, Sir, I propose to take Questions Nos. 4 and 5 together.

The only comprehensive information on annual expenditure on advertising relates to that placed through Irish advertising agencies. Particulars are available for the year 1958 and for each year from 1960 to 1967 inclusive. These are given in a statement which, with your permission, Sir, I will circulate in the Official Report. Comprehensive information on advertising expenditure other than through Irish advertising agencies is not available.

In the year 1967 advertising expenditure through advertising agencies amounted to £8.4 million which represents 0.8 per cent of gross national expenditure.
