Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment Prospects.

1.

asked the Taoiseach whether he foresees any decreases in employment in 1969 arising out of the effects of the Anglo-Irish Free Trade Agreement.

2.

asked the Taoiseach whether he foresees any increase in employment in 1969.

I propose, with your permission, Sir, to take Questions Nos. 1 and 2 together.

I do not foresee any decrease in over-all employment in 1969 arising out of the effects of the Anglo-Irish Free Trade Agreement. In fact, I expect total employment in that year to show an increase.

Does the Taoiseach think that the measures included in the recent Budget are likely to improve the employment situation in the New Year?

Yes, I do. They will maintain a steady growth. That is what the purpose is.

Is the Taoiseach saying that the increased taxation next year will lead to an improved employment position?

Yes. That was the whole purpose of it and it will improve the whole economy as well.
