Vol. 237 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Illumination of Pedestrian Crossings.

43.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he has had any further consultation with the Dublin County Council and Dublin Corporation regarding the illumination of pedestrian crossings.

As I indicated in my previous reply to the Deputy, the satisfactory illumination of pedestrian crossings can best be achieved by the provision of public lighting to traffic route standard, and what is being studied by my Department in consultation with the two local authorities he mentions is whether satisfactory interim measures can be taken. The county council are providing special spot lighting at the crossings in their areas and the performance of this will be studied.

Is the Minister not aware that the spot lighting at these crossings that he refers to is, so far, only like a candle when it comes on at night?

It is only an interim measure.

It is a danger rather than anything else.
