Vol. 237 No. 6

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayo Industries.

64.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if, in view of the growing unemployment in Mayo in towns like Ballina, Killala, Ballycastle, Swinford, Charlestown, Kiltimagh, Foxford and Crossmolina etc., he will take the necessary steps to have industries established there with a view to providing employment and stemming the tide of emigration.

I am aware of the need for establishing new industries in the towns mentioned and in other areas. The Government have already provided valuable facilities to encourage the establishment and development of industries in all areas. It is for private enterprise to take advantage of these facilities and local interest should do their best to encourage private enterprise to set up industries in their own areas.

The operation of the small industries programme in County Mayo should make a worthwhile contribution to the employment position there. I understand, in fact, that a substantial number of applications for assistance under the scheme have already been received from small industries in County Mayo.

The Deputy may take it that any sound proposals by local or other interests for the establishment of industries in these and other western areas will receive my most sympathetic consideration.
