asked the Minister for Finance whether any discussions will take place with trading interests prior to the introduction of the new wholesale tax.

The present proposals do not relate to the introduction of a new wholesale tax but to an increase in the rate of the existing tax. The Revenue Commissioners will be glad to discuss with trading interests any problems they may have in connection with the proposed increase in the rate of tax.

Have there been any arrangements for a meeting with any of the trading interests involved?

And no representations have been received?

Not as far as I am aware.

Will this wholesale tax be applied before the 1st January?

No, it will be applied to receipts after the 1st January.

Where trading interests are concerned the wholesale tax in practice will be effective before January 1st?

The transactions that take place before January 1st in respect of which payments are not made until afterwards.

The new wholesale tax is now operative?

No. Anybody can pay his accounts before 1st January.

Relative to trading conditions and the need for credit, in actual fact the new wholesale tax is now operative?

Nobody can say that with certainty.
