Vol. 237 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Shannon-Paris Air Service.

19.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power the date on which the Aer Lingus Shannon to Paris service commenced; the factors which then influenced the decision by the company to operate this service; and the factors which have now influenced the decision to terminate the service.

The service was introduced in June, 1965, as an experiment. Its immediate profitability was not then encouraging but it was considered to have long-term potential for tourist traffic and as a feeder to the Aerlínte trans-Atlantic service. The resumption of high frequency services between Paris and New York by another airline has removed any prospect of economic operation of this service.
