Vol. 237 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - CIE Container Traffic.

20.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power what plans CIE have for the development of container traffic from Limerick to Dublin; if he is aware that these plans will cause redundancy among dockers and other workers in Limerick; and what proposals the Government have for providing alternative employment for such workers.

I am informed by CIE that, by the provision at Dublin and Limerick of equipment suitable for handling containers and flats, they hope to attract back to rail certain long-distance internal traffic now carried by road and to unitise some of the traffic at present carried by rail. The company are not aware that the new arrangements will involve any redundancy at Limerick.
