Vol. 237 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Meath Lands.

187.

asked the Minister for Lands if the Land Commission propose to acquire the remainder of the Koln estate at Drakerath, Carlanstown, Kells, County Meath, that has recently been offered for sale.

Proceedings were instituted recently for the remainder of this estate comprising some 280 acres in the townland of Drakerath. The appropriate statutory notices have only just been published and will be served on the owner at an early date. In the meantime, negotiations on price have been initiated without prejudice to any objection which may be lodged later on behalf of the owner.

Is the Minister aware that this farm, which was bought by a German, is being taken in three parts? One part, a very sizeable portion, was taken some years ago and the second part was taken about two years ago. Is it not a bit ridiculous that this gentleman should be allowed to play around, as it would appear, to get the last penny for the farm? Would the Minister try to get his colleague to have the remainder of the farm acquired as soon as possible and to have it divided, because there is no point in taking it over if it is to be left in a worse condition than it was when the German bought it?

It would appear that the matter will be finalised favourably very soon.
