Vol. 237 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wexford Flooding.

59.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, in view of the heavy cost to the Wexford Corporation of dealing with the continually recurring flooding in South Main Street and King Street, Wexford, he will be prepared to make a grant to meet such cost.

As I indicated in a reply to a recent question, preliminary proposals for relief of flooding at King Street, Wexford, and adjoining areas were approved by me on 12th instant.

The scheme will rank for subsidy at the rate normally applicable to sanitary services works.

Could the Minister indicate how much that subsidy will be?

It is a percentage.

What is the percentage?

It may be either 40 per cent or 50 per cent.

Is the Minister aware that Deputy Allen announced last week that the Minister was prepared to give a sum of £64,000 for this project?

No, I am not so aware.

It was in the local papers.

That would not mean anything.

I assume it was a message that came from Deputy Allen. Did Wexford Corporation ask for a grant?

I am not aware of that. They have submitted preliminary proposals for the relief of flooding at King Street and adjoining areas at an estimated cost of £64,000. The scheme will qualify for a subsidy.

I only want to say that I was informed in relation to the question last week, when I inquired locally, that they had asked for a grant and for facilities to borrow in order to do this job. Will loan facilities be provided also?

Yes, it will be necessary to provide loan facilities.

From the local loans fund?

That is a matter to be decided.

The Minister would not tell me that last week.

The Deputy must not have asked me. He told me this week

I asked about four times.

When the Minister knew that Deputy Corish knew it, he told him.

I did not know it. Deputy Corish told me.

(Interruptions.)
