Vol. 237 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Purchasing Practice of Supermarkets.

149.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that certain supermarket managements have requested their suppliers to dispense with their commercial travellers and allow their purchasing officers to purchase direct at a discount equivalent to the rate of commission normally paid to the company representative; if he will introduce regulations to prevent this practice; and if he will make a general statement on this matter.

I have no knowledge of such requests being made. If it should appear that the practice exists on an appreciable scale, and in circumstances in which it would appear undesirable, I will be prepared to consider whether any action should be taken to deal with the position.
