Vol. 237 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Telephone Installations.

41.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a person in County Leitrim (name supplied) will have a telephone installed.

An application for telephone service was received from a person of the name stated, but with a different address. Terms were quoted to him in April, 1967, and as he did not accept them his application was regarded as withdrawn. He has not applied for telephone service since.

42.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will give details of the number of people who are on the waiting list for residential telephones for (a) up to three months, (b) three to six months, (c) six to nine months, (d) nine to 12 months, (e) 12 to 24 months, and (f) for any period over 24 months; what are the principal areas where the waiting list is the largest; and what plans he has to improve the position.

The information required is as follows:—

(a)

2,580

(b)

1,170

(c)

615

(d)

460

(e)

270

(f)

10

The total of 5,105 includes 1,090 lines in course of installation.

The rate of installation is being increased progressively to overtake arrears. 19,393 lines were installed in the year ended 31st March, 1968, as compared with 15,528 in the previous year, which had itself been a record. I expect connections in the current year to be substantially higher again than in 1967/68.

There are 1,740 on the waiting list in Dublin and the balance of 3,365 are fairly evenly distributed throughout the exchange areas in the provinces, with no great concentration in any particular area.
