Vol. 237 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rural Electrification.

12.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power when he expects that rural electrification will be extended to the townland of Shannafarraghaun, Finney, County Mayo.

I am informed by the ESB that the townland referred to by the Deputy is in the Board's Leenane rural area which is scheduled for re-canvass under the rural electrification post-development scheme in about 15 months time. Construction work should commence about six months later and supply will then be extended to all applicants who accept the terms quoted and have their houses wired.

Is it because Deputy Calleary was asleep that Deputy Geoghegan put down that question?

This area is in County Galway. Deputy Coogan does not know his own area.

13.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power when he expects that rural electrification will be extended to the townlands of Upper Camus, Lower Camus and Lettermuckoo, Connemara, County Galway.

I am informed by the ESB that the townlands referred to by the Deputy are in the Board's Camus and Lettermore rural areas which are not likely to be re-canvassed under the rural electrification post-development scheme before the end of 1972. Construction work commences six months after the canvass.

14.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power when ESB lighting and power will be made available in Carriganassa, Knocknagappagh, Ballyfeinan and Meenoughter areas, Killeagh, County Cork.

I am informed by the Electricity Supply Board that the areas referred to by the Deputy are in the Board's Glendine rural area which is not likely to be re-canvassed under the rural electrification post-development scheme before 1972. Construction work commences about six months after the canvass.

There is something wrong with communications there.

15.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he is aware of the considerable back-log of electricity installation work and the consequent hardship of farmer and householder applicants; and if he will take steps to ensure a supply to these people within a reasonable time.

I understand from the ESB that they have made arrangements to offer supply to all unconnected houses in rural areas under a planned programme. This will enable the most effective and economic use to be made of the construction crews and other resources available for rural electrification. The programme involves working on an area by area basis over the next four years or so; by then all unconnected houses will have had an opportunity of taking supply.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that the Electricity Supply Board, having been allowed to get away with a three-year delay in the canvass, is now informing applicants that if they do not put in an electric cooker they will have to pay £35 for installation even though they are in a canvassed area where installation is proceeding?

I am not so aware.

That is the fact. Perhaps, the Parliamentary Secretary would look into that?

Certainly.

It seems to be a most unreasonable requisition.

Put down a question.

Do not try to teach me. I do not try to teach Deputy Corry.
