Vol. 237 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Turkeys.

6.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he has any indication as to the probable price of turkeys for the coming Christmas; and whether supplies are likely to be adequate to meet demand.

As the Christmas market conditions for turkeys are influenced by varying factors, principally supply and demand, I cannot indicate probable price levels. Supplies are likely to be adequate to meet demand.

Could the Minister have the exact and proper marketing price announced on Radio Telefís Éireann at times? Last year there was a bad market in Mayo, I think, and when it was announced people thought they would get turkeys for 9d and 1/3 a lb. If there is a slump in one market it should not be announced. It can be very misleading for people who have turkeys to sell and people who want to purchase turkeys. Great care should be taken in announcing the price.

The Deputy can take it that in so far as I have any control over that sort of information it will not be broadcast, but, on the other hand, that does not mean that such things may not be put on as a matter of news.

That could happen.
