Vol. 237 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Tipperary Garda Houses.

52.

asked the Minister for Justice what plans his Department have for building houses for Gardaí in North Tipperary; whether there are any in the course of construction there; how many have been completed this year; and how many he intends to build.

My general policy in relation to Tipperary and elsewhere is to have a house for a married garda provided in conjuction with the building of a new station. Apart from houses so provided, I am satisfied that the building of new stations, and the carrying out of improvements and repairs to existing stations must, in the allocation of available funds, be given precedence over the building of houses for gardaí.

There are no garda houses being built in North Tipperary at present. Three were completed there this year. Future developments in particular areas will depend on the outcome of the present general review of garda organisation and distribution of manpower, and also on the availability of funds. At this juncture I cannot say how many houses are likely to be built in any particular county in the immediate future.
