67.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state with reference to all ranks in the Defence Forces below the rank of NCO (a) the date of their last pay increase (b) their present salary and (c) when their next increase is likely to become effective.

(a) The last pay increase for privates was effective from 1st June, 1968.

(b) The present weekly rates of pay of privates are as follows:—

Private 3 Star—

With less than 3 years' service £8 11s 11d.

,, 3 or more but less than 9 years' service £8 19s 7d.

,, 9 or more years'service £9 4s 8d.

Private 2 Star—

,, less than 3 years' service £7 17s 0d.

,, 3 or more but less than 9 years' service £8 4s 4d.

,, 9 or more years' service £8 9s 5d.

Private Grade I

— £7 3s 0d.

Private Grade II

— £4 1s 0d.

A single soldier resident in barracks receives free food and accommodation. A married soldier who does not receive food in barracks is granted a weekly allowance of £1 17s 11d.

Wife's allowance at the rate of £3 8s 7d a week and children's allowance at the rate of 13s 5d a week for each eligible child are also payable.

Technicians receive extra pay of 7s 8d, £1 10s 6d or £2 17s 3d a week depending on the nature of their trade.

Free uniform and medical treatment are provided for all soldiers.

(c) The question of the next increase in pay for privates will fall to be considered in the light of developments affecting public service remuneration generally.
