Vol. 237 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Transport Service.

83.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware of the hardship imposed on many parents in connection with the school transport service where payments of £2 15s per child have to be made at the start of the school term; and if he will arrange with Córas Iompair Éireann that the payments be made weekly so as to ease the burden on these parents.

Special school transport services are provided to cater for children who live certain distances from schools. These children are carried free of charge and, therefore, arrangements for the collection of fares do not arise.

A certain number of children who are not entitled to free transport, are permitted by CIE to use these services on certain conditions. By Government decision these fares have not been increased.

On the question of charge has the payment of 55s at the beginning of the school term been abandoned?

This is a matter I will take up with CIE.

Would it be any help to the Minister if I were to take action?

I would like that. I am having the representations made by the Deputy transmitted to CIE.

84.

asked the Minister for Education the present position regarding the proposed conveyance by free public transport of the school children from the Knockaninane east area to Annabla national school in the parish of Kilcummin, County Kerry, as many of these children under 12 years of age are more than three miles away from the school.

An application for a school transport service to Annabla NS is being investigated. I hope to be in a position to give a decision in the matter at an early date.

85.

asked the Minister for Education whether he is considering proposals to provide free public transport from the Coolroe East and Aglish areas near Ballyhar, Killarney to Faha national school; and, if so, when a decision will be taken on this application.

An application for a school transport service to Faha NS for the children of the Coolroe, Aglish and other neighbouring districts is being investigated. It is hoped to arrive at a decision at an early date.
