Vol. 237 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kiln Drying Plants.

103.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the number of Kiln drying plants for drying timber in this country; whether he will consider encouraging the erection of more such plants to dry native timber and to reduce the quantity of timber being imported annually; and whether he will make a statement on the matter.

The number of such plants that have come to the notice of my Department is fourteen. I am advised that the existing kiln drying facilities are adequate in relation to the availability of home grown saw-log timber, supplies of which have been relatively static for some years. Further I understand that there will not be an improvement in the supply position before the mid-1970's. It will, therefore, be many years at present consumption levels before home grown timber will noticeably affect supplies of imported timber.
