asked the Minister for Finance the amount of the increase in tax between February, 1957 and the present time on (a) a gallon of petrol, (b) a glass of whiskey, (c) a pint of beer, (d) 20 ordinary cigarettes and (e) 20 tipped cigarettes.

The answer is in the form of a tabular statement and I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to circulate it with the Official Report.

Following is the Statement:—

(a) The figures do not include Turnover Tax which was introduced as from 1 November, 1963, and is payable at the rate of 2½% on receipts from retail sales.

(b) The information officially available in respect of filter-tipped cigarettes prior to April, 1962, is not such as would permit reliable information to be furnished in respect of this item. The increase in duty content of twenty standard size filter-tipped cigarettes since April, 1962, is approximately 1s. 2d.
