Vol. 237 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Participation in Politics by Post Office Officials.

60.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether he will give serious consideration to proposals to allow post office officials to take an active part in politics; and whether he will make a statement on the matter.

A staff claim that members of grades represented by the Post Office Workers' Union should be allowed to participate in politics and become candidates for membership of Dáil Éireann, Seanad Éireann and all local authority bodies is at present being considered by the Post Office Departmental Council under the Scheme of Conciliation and Arbitration for the Civil Service. Pending the submission of the Council's report it would be inappropriate for me to comment on the matter.
