Vol. 237 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Sorting Office Conditions.

61.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he has taken any action to alleviate the workers' conditions in Sheriff Street sorting office, Dublin.

Welfare facilities for the staff in the Central Sorting Office are of a high standard. With regard to accommodation, the new office is of a most modern kind and is a major improvement on the old buildings. As I said in reply to a question by the Deputy on 20th November we have a dust problem in the new building and all possible steps are being taken to deal with it. A certain amount of dust is unavoidable in a large highly mechanised sorting office. To reduce as far as practicable the infiltration of coal dust from the adjoining coal yards, the windows on one side of the building have been sealed up and electric ventilators and fans have been installed but coal dust is a general problem in the area; it is not confined to the Central Sorting Office. Measures have also been taken to eliminate glare and to prevent over-heating of the building in certain conditions. Complaints of this kind are likely to arise in any large building. The dust problem referred to will continue to receive the attention of my Department until a satisfactory solution has been found.
