Vol. 237 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Reclassification of Roads.

74.

asked the Minister for Local Government when he expects his Department will be able to give details of the reclassification of county and main roads which were promised over 12 months ago.

Considerable progress has been made by my Department in their study of this highly complex undertaking. The analysis of the results of various surveys and censuses has not yet reached a stage at which details of the reclassification could be announced.

Would the Minister be able to say how long it is since this survey was started?

Early in 1967. No, it started before that.

That is a four not a seven.

It is not a four. I do not know when it started.

In 1964. Surely that is a little bit too long?

This is a very complex undertaking. The survey has been done and the analysis of the results is now being made.

Surely the Minister will agree that it is unreasonable to say, year after year, when questions about this are put down, that the matter is under consideration? As it is so important it should be finished by now.

A proposed scheme of reclassification is practically ready.
